NY Workers’ Comp Fiber/Fabric Manufacturing Rates Increase

Many of the rates for NY Workers’ Comp fiber/fabric manufacturing class codes have increased in 2013. The most significant increases were in class codes 2288 (felt manufacturing), class code 2302 (silk thread or yarn manufacturing), and class code 2380 (webbing manufacturing).

NY Workers’ Comp fiber/fabric manufacturing class code 2288 is applied to insureds who manufacture felt or felt-like material. This invovles taking raw materials, mixing them into desired proportions, passing them through breaker, intermediate and finished cards, and layed into layers forming felt. The felt is then pressed, hardened, scoured, washed, dyed, and dried. Products created by insureds whose operations apply to NY Workers’ Comp fiber/fabric manufacturing class code 2288 include car mats, car interior trim and headliners and padding used as filler for sleeping bags and mattress pads.
NY Workers’ Comp fiber/fabric manufacturing class code 2302 is applied to insureds who buy silk or synthetic fiber and convert it into thread and/or yarn. The process involves winding, cleaning, doubling, rewinding, and reeling. The yarn may be dyed and then woven into fabric.
NY Workers’ Comp fiber/fabric manufacturing class code 2380 is applied to insureds who manufacture elastic or non-elastic webbing. Nylon, acetate, rayon and cotton yarns are received and processed through either knitting and crocheting machines or narrow fabric shuttle looms. The product is then skeined, spooled or pulled, dyed and run through finishing machines prior to being blocked and spooled for shipment. NY Workers’ Comp fiber/fabric manufacturing class code 2380 also includes the manufacturing of braid, tassels or fringes, as well as the manufacturing of net, an open meshed fabric made from cotton or synthetic yarn which is knotted together or woven together at regular intervals.

The rates for NY Workers’ Comp fiber/fabric manufacturing class codes have increased significantly in 2013. The rate for class code 2288 changed from 10 to 11.73, a 17.3% increase. The rate for class code 2302 changed from 5.50 to 5.84, a 6.2% increase. The rate for 2380 changed from 7.61 to 10.24, a 34.6% increase. Insureds whose operations are covered under NY Workers’ Comp fiber/fabric manufacturing class codes will see higher premiums in the 2013-2014 policy term.
